Redcar MP Anna Turley has welcomed the news that upgrade work on the temperamental rail crossing on West Dyke Road will begin in November.

New barriers will be installed which use a telescopic sliding design, custom built to address the unique challenges posed at the site.

There have been more than 15 breakdowns and closures over the past eighteen months. The crossing is often forced to close in strong winds for safety reasons, causing problems for pedestrians and motorists trying to access the town centre and delaying bus services.

The work on the crossing is expected to be undertaken on the week of the 8th November. The local council will also be carrying out planned road resurfacing works at the same time to minimise the amount of time the road is closed.

Network Rail had originally planned to upgrade the crossing in 2018 but they have fast-tracked the design and approval process, which normally takes 3-4 years, due to pressure from the local MP who used her first intervention in Parliament to call for the upgrade.

Anna Turley, MP for Redcar said:

“It is excellent news that this upgrade is going ahead much sooner than originally planned. I am pleased Network Rail have listened and recognised the urgency of the situation.

“Whilst the temporary closure of the road for the work to be completed will be an inconvenience in itself, the new barrier system should bring an end to the frequent failures and closures that have brought our town centre to a standstill. I am sure local people and businesses will be pleased to see an end to the regular disruption.”
