The RNLI lifeboats from Redcar were launched on Sunday 30 August 2015 to rescue a man and his dog after they were reported to be cut off by the incoming tide at Huntcliff, Saltburn, just moments after the end of a fundraising event in the seaside town.

The lifeboats launched at around 3.15pm after the man's plight was reported to UK Coastguard by jetski riders who were in the area.

An RNLI lifeguard based at Saltburn used his rescue board to make his way to the scene to reassure the man.

The man and his dog, a gold-coloured spaniel was taken aboard the smaller inshore lifeboat and landed at the Ship Inn, Saltburn.

Dave Cocks, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Redcar RNLI, said: "It was a bit ironic that we'd just finished collecting funds at Saltburn when the call came.

"We'd been disappointed earlier in the day when the planned training exercise at Saltburn with the Coastguard helicopter had to be cancelled because it had been called to a rescue in the North Sea, but now people have seen what we do for real."

Dave Cocks added: "We regularly give out warnings about checking tide times before walking round the cliffs or on the rocks. It's particularly dangerous at the moment because the high tides we're have right now cause people to seek refuge very close to the cliff face.

"That puts them at grave risk of being struck by falling rocks, a danger that many people don't appreciate.

"On this occasion the man said he'd been prepared to wait until the tide fell back again, but the longer he'd stayed in that location, the greater the risk he'd be injured. It would have been almost dark before he could escape, so all in all it was the best thing to be brought back on the lifeboat."
