A court has heard how a drug driver was caught behind the wheel on the A66 while under the influence of cannabis.

41-year-old David Aitchison, of Carlin How, admitted drug driving during a short hearing at Teesside Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

The court heard how Aitchison was driving his Kia Rio on the A66 westbound at Middlesbrough on April 6th this year.

Mr Aitchison was told the offence puts him in breach of a crown court suspended sentence and therefore he must be sentenced at the higher court.

He was granted unconditional bail and told to appear at Teesside Crown Court on October 31st.

He was also given an interim driving ban.

Detectives have charged two males after separate alleged incidents in in Middlesbrough.

After a teenager reportedly made off from mobile patrols in Middlesbrough late on Thursday morning, a 16-year-old boy was pursued and detained then arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a Class A drug.

Cash and an amount of crack cocaine was recovered.

Detectives from Middlesbrough CID interviewed the teenager, and he was subsequently charged and remanded to appear at court yesterday.

And in a separate incident where a knife point robbery was reported at Leinster News in the town’s Newport ward early on the morning of 1st October, the detectives arrested and charged a 26-year-old man with robbery, theft and possession of a bladed article.

He also appeared at court yesterday.

The West Dyke Road level crossing in Redcar will be closed from this evening for essential work to be carried out by Network Rail.

The closure will be operation from 9pm this evening until Monday 7am on Monday to carry out essential maintenance to the track.

A diversion will be implemented for pedestrians and Vehicular Traffic, as this will not be accessible during these times due to this being a full track renewal at the Station and crossing.

The businesses between Birdsall Row and Thrush Road will remain accessible.

During the closure a replacement bus service will be operating between Middlesbrough and Saltburn.
