A man who violently assaulted a woman by punching her, kicking her, and strangling her during a sustained attack has been jailed.

22-year-old Ryan Raynor from Thornaby subjected the victim to a horrific attack in May this year in Middlesbrough and he was arrested by officers who launched an investigation.

Mr Raynor was subsequently charged with attempted Section 18 wounding, threats to kill, intentional strangulation and common assault and he pleaded guilty to all four offences at Teesside Magistrates’ Court earlier this year.

Mr Raynor appeared at Teesside Crown Court on Monday where he was jailed for a total of four and half years.

The courts also imposed an indefinite restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim.

The volunteers of the Redcar RNLI lifeboats have been called into action in our area.

Just before quarter to five yesterday afternoon, the Redcar D Class lifeboat was launched following reports of a dog being swept out to sea off Redcar.

The crew carried out a search between Redcar and Marske.

However nothing was found and the lifeboat was returned to the boathouse after the dog was reported to be fine and well and back onshore.

Members of the public are reminded that if you see anyone in difficulty in the water you should dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Big crowds packed Saltburn and Redcar yesterday for the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain - the country's most prestigious cycle race.

Enthusiasts lined the route in Easington, Loftus, Brotton, Skelton, Lingdale and Marske as the elite riders raced over from Darlington.

There was street entertainment and music for the bumper crowds of people who came from across the country to enjoy the race.

Stephen Williams was the rider who crossed the line in first place and received his certificate from Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Cllr Neil Bendelow.
