A man has been arrested following an alleged incident which saw armed police swoop on a residential street in Middlesbrough.

Police were called to Valley Road in the town at around 11.40am yesterday morning and closed a section of road while the incident was dealt with.

According to witnesses four armed response vehicles and armed police attended the incident  and later erected a small cordon.

Officers arrested a 31-year-old man at the scene.

Fire crews were called to fire at disused barn on the Kirkleatham Business Park at the weekend.

Three fire engines and a Cleveland Fire Brigade car were stationed at the scene on Saturday evening

Firefighters could be seen using a hose to extinguish the flames as an officer guarded the scene.

The derelict barn is a detached property surrounded by grassland.

The brigade took to Twitter to warn Teessiders to avoid the area. A spokesperson said: "We currently (04/05 @ 16:49) have 3 fire appliances in attendance at a building on fire on Kirkleatham Business Park. Please avoid the area whilst we deal with this incident."

The nature of the incident is not yet known. Emergency services have been contacted for comment.
