The return of steelmaking to Teesside has moved a step closer after plans for a new ‘electric arc’ furnace were approved.

The proposed new facility, which will use green technology to melt scrap and produce new steel, has been predicted to create hundreds of good quality, well paid jobs in our area.

Councillors had received a “hybrid” application seeking planning permission for the steel manufacturing facility intended for British Steel’s Lackenby works and outline permission for associated buildings, apparatus and infrastructure.

Members of Redcar and Cleveland Council’s regulatory committee unanimously approved the application, although some expressed concerns over environmental impacts and the implementation of a large number of planning conditions attached to the permission granted.

The detailed design is yet to be finalised and will be subject to further so-called reserved matters approval at a later stage.

A 21-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a stabbing in our area.

The incident happened at around half past midnight on Sunday on Birchington Avenue in Grangetown.

A man sustained stab wounds and was taken to James Cook Hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

The 21-year-old from Redcar appeared at Teesside Magistrates' Court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance.

A 20-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of attempted murder has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Any witnesses who have not yet come forward are asked to contact the police on the non-emergency number 101.

Two men have been arrested after armed police descended upon a petrol station in Middlesbrough.

Cleveland Police received reports of men with weapons on Doxford Walk, in Hemlington, at around 12.20pm yesterday.

Officers responded and stopped a vehicle on Acklam Road, at the Tesco Esso Express petrol station at the Blue Bell roundabout.

Pictures taken from the scene show around eight police vehicles in the petrol forecourt, with eyewitnesses reporting that officers carrying guns surrounded a Vauxhall Mokka vehicle at the pumps.

The force has confirmed that two men - aged 27 and 34 - were arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.

They were both taken into police custody.
