Emergency services were called to the Saltburn cliff lift after a fire broke out in the station yesterday morning.

Cleveland Fire Brigade was called to the blaze at around 10.30am, sending three engines to the scene.

Grey smoke was seen billowing from the doors and the roof of the building, while both of the tram cars remained roughly halfway up the bank.

Redcar and Cleveland Council say that staff found smoke coming from the tramway when they opened the station yesterday morning.

It is not currently known what started the fire, however it has been confirmed that nobody has been injured.

Fire crews left the scene at around twenty past midday.

A court has heard how a burglar who preyed on an 87-year-old woman left his victim feeling afraid in her own home.

21-year-old Dylan Bandeira talked his way into the pensioner's home in Redcar at the end of May last year under the guise of selling cleaning products.

He attempted to persuade her to buy low value items at an inflated price before stealing a large amount of cash.

According to Cleveland Police, while the woman was physically unharmed, she was extremely shaken and left feeling afraid in her own home.

After extensive enquiries Redcar and Cleveland CID identified Mr Bandeira as the suspect and they arrested and charged him.

He was sent to prison for three-years and four-months after being found guilty of burglary at court last week.

Radical transport plans announced for the Tees Valley include spending millions on road and rail links as well as a tram service in five town centres.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen announced the vision for travel across Teesside including the development of a business case for electrification of the rail network from Northallerton to Saltburn, the overhaul of South Bank Railway station to include a park and ride facility.

Other potential projects include a feasibility study to examine the removal of West Dyke level crossing at Redcar, looking at alternatives including a bridge on West Dyke Road, and a study to investigate the reinstatement of Saltburn to Boulby line for passengers.

The package would be delivered using £1bn in funding secured after the scrapping of the northern leg of the HS2 rail line.

The TVCA Cabinet will make a decision on the proposals later this month.
