The government has cancelled controversial plans for a hydrogen trial in Redcar, saying it's due to a 'lack of supply'.

The plans to use hydrogen energy to heat 1,800 homes and businesses were announced in May last year.

Northern Gas Networks would have switched the gas supply to locally produced hydrogen.

In a report from the Department for Energy, Security and Net Zero, it was confirmed the project had been cancelled the project due to "issues in obtaining a robust, local hydrogen supply".

The news has been welcomed by opponents of the project.

The plans attracted protests from local residents with Redcar and Cleveland Hydrogen Trial Group writing a letter to the Government, warning of "a lack of substantial local support".

North Yorkshire Police launched an investigation into the incident but no arrests were made intially.

The force has now issued an update, saying the i40 driver, a man in his 20s, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He has been released on bail while enquiries continue.
