A man has died and five people left injured following a crash on the A66 in Middlesbrough.

Police have confirmed that a 70-year-old man has sadly passed away following a medical episode which led to a four-vehicle collision on the A66 Hartington slip lane, on Wednesday morning.

The road was closed for several hours following the collision at 8:40am, whilst medical teams worked to try to save the man’s life.

A 44-year-old man travelling with the 70-year-old in a white Mercedes Sprinter van, suffered a sprained ankle.

Both men were from outside of the Teesside area.

The driver of a blue Toyota Corolla taxi, a 22-year-old man, and his passenger, a 55-year-old woman, both sustained minor injuries.

The driver of a white Peugeot 208, an 18-year-old woman, and a 25-year-old woman driving a black Audi A1 also suffered minor injuries.

A further 130 drivers have been tested for alcohol or drugs as part of an ongoing Christmas drink and drug driving initiative.

The tests were carried out on West View Road in Hartlepool and Cargo Fleet Lane in Middlesbrough.

Officers say they are pleased to report that no drivers were found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The campaign continues throughout December and into January, as officers continue to urge people not to get behind the wheel whilst under the influence.

The Covid mobile vaccination clinics are back in our area today.

The next stop for the pop-up clinic is at Tesco on the Trunk Road in South Bank, today between 10am and 5pm.
