A swan has had to be put to sleep after a dog attack at a local wildlife pond.
The incident happened at Skelton pond on Saturday morning, with the injured bird discovered lying in the reeds by a resident who had been walking nearby.
It was rushed to a vet in Saltburn but because of the extent of its injuries, it sadly had to be put to sleep.
The attack had left the bird's wing bones exposed with damage to its tendons.
A review of the bite injuries indicated bites from a large breed dog but the committee who look after the pond say that as there is no CCTV in the wildlife area and no witnesses, little can be done.
There has now been a call for more awareness about the danger dogs can pose to wildlife and a plea to people out walking their pets to keep them on leads.
A 13-year-old boy is due to appear in court today after being charged with two counts of robbery and with possession of an imitation firearm.
The follows an alleged incident on Linthorpe Road in Middlesbrough in the early hours of 9th December in which a 30-year-old man reported being robbed of cash after being threatened with an air pistol.
The boy, who can’t be named for legal reasons, is due to attend Teesside Magistrates’ Court later today.
