Police say that an 11-year-old has been arrested in connection with an incident that saw children terrorise supermarket staff.

The incident, which took place at the Berwick Hills Morrisons store on Wednesday evening, saw children hurl a scooter at the doors of the supermarket, smashing the glass, as well as swearing and spitting at security staff.

The video of the incident went viral on TikTok as Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston called for arrests.

A 48-hour dispersal order was slapped on the area surrounding Berwick Hills shops and the supermarket by Cleveland Police to deter the anti-social behaviour of youths.

The force confirmed yesterday that an 11-year-old has been arrested in connection with the incident and has been bailed to the Youth Offending Team.

Families across the borough are set to receive extra support thanks to a major funding boost.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council is one of 75 local authorities across the country to receive Government funding for Family Hubs which provide support to parents and carers of children and young people aged to 19.

The funding will help transform and improve both the range and availability of services at existing family hubs -  including health visiting and maternity services.

The vision is for Family Hubs to become the first port of call for Early Help services, where a parent or carer can drop in and either receive or be signposted to the services on offer to support them and their child.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council is urging residents to claim the £200 discretionary Household Support Payment.

If you are struggling with the cost of living, you may be entitled to the financial help, and you do not need to receive welfare benefits in order to be eligible for it.

To find out more about the fund, if you are eligible and how you can make a claim, please visit the Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council web site.
