The iconic Redcar Blast Furnace is set to be demolished later today, and disappear from our areas skyline forever.

An explosive demolition is taking place at 9 o'clock this morning to bring down the Casting Houses, the Dust Catcher, Charge Conveyors, and the Blast Furnace itself.

The four enormous gas stoves which heated the furnace are set to be demolished separately in the next month.

Large numbers of local people are expected to gather to watch the demolition take place, including many former workers in the steel industry in our area.

The Redcar Blast Furnace was commissioned in 1979 and has dominated the Teesside skyline for more than four decades.

Standing at 365ft tall, it was ranked the second largest of its kind in Europe, and produced 3.6million tonnes of iron a year.

Police are investigating following an alleged incident in Eston where a group of people caused extensive criminal damage to a residential address and used weapons to assault a 54-year-old man.

The man remains receiving hospital treatment for serious injuries and is in a stable condition.

Four people (aged 15, 24, 36 and 37) have been arrested on suspicion of assault, criminal damage and affray and they remain in custody being questioned.

The alleged incident occured just before 6.30pm on Saturday on Sedgemoor Road in the Bankfields area.

Enquiries are ongoing and police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them on the non-emergency number 101.

Police have arrested a man following reports of a ram raid burglary at a local business.

In the early hours of last Thursday, a dark SUV type vehicle was driven into the shutters at Arncliffe Stores on West Lane in Middlesbrough.

The man was arrested in connection with an alleged two in one burglary at an address in Westwood Avenue in Middlesbrough which also happened last Thursday.

Officers believe the two alleged incidents are believed to be linked.

The 25-year-old man has been interviewed in relation to the report of the house burglary and theft of car and released on bail while enquiries into both alleged incidents continue.
