...and now, with a Rugby League World Cup fixture between Tonga and the Cook Islands at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough tomorrow, one of the sides has been taking in the local heritage links between their country and ours.
Nearly one week on from a crash on the A19, which has left a man seriously ill in hospital and four others with minor injuries, collision investigators from Cleveland Police are still asking for witnesses to piece together what happened.
Emergency services were scrambled around 5.30 last Sunday morning to the A19 northbound by the exit to the A1027 (pron: ten twenty seven) at Norton, where they found a BMW had collided with a barrier.
If you witnessed the crash or were in the area at the time and have dashcam footage, contact Cleveland Police on 101.
Police in South Bank are appealing for witnesses after a moped was stolen at knifepoint.
It happened on Thursday teatime around 5.40pm near to the junction of Middlesbrough Rd and Normanby Rd when the owner of a black moped was threatened with a knife and forced to hand over the vehicle.
The suspect is described as a white male with fair skin and ginger hair, skinny build and around 5 foot 9 inches tall. He wearing dark jogging bottoms and a dark grey puffer jacket.
The bike's owner, whilst shaken by the incident, was thankfully unhurt.
Cleveland Police are asking anyone with information to call 101 or contact Crimestoppers if you wish to remain anonymous.
Now, with a Rugby League World Cup fixture between Tonga and the Cook Islands at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough tomorrow, one of the sides has been taking in the local heritage links between their country and ours.
Sporting stars from the Cook Islands team have taken time out to look around the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum at Marton and exchanged gifts in the latest engagement event taking place to mark the global competition.
The team was presented with a quilt from the children at Marton Manor Primary School and in return, a shirt was exchanged, with the side taking part in a cake-cutting ceremony to mark Captain Cook’s 294th birthday.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said that it’s been a pleasure to host the Cook Islands squad for the event, as well as acknowledging the unique tie with the Pacific nation.
The game (between Tonga and the Cook Islands) kicks off tomorrow at the Riverside Stadium at 2.30pm, with roads in the area, including the A66 expected to be very busy before and after the game.
