New figures have shown that more people committed suicide in Redcar and Cleveland in recent years than almost anywhere else in the country.

Between 2018 and 2020, there were the equivalent of 17.4 suicides per 100,000 people in Redcar and Cleveland.

That compares to an England and Wales average of 10.5, making our area the 10th highest rate in the country.

Across Teesside in 2020, there were 25 suicides in Middlesbrough, 25 in Redcar and Cleveland, and 22 in Stockton - putting all three areas above the national average.

The highest rates of suicide are among men - who are traditionally far less likely to speak about their feelings than women.

Armed police and paramedics were called to a street in  Middlesbrough at the weekend.

Cleveland Police were called to Fulbeck Road at around 7.30pm on Saturday, to reports of an ongoing incident and are understood to have requested support from armed officers.

At least four armed officers attended the street along with three paramedics.

The nature of the incident is yet to be confirmed by the force.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council have asked the public to be aware of essential drainage works which are taking place at Eston Cemetery this week.

The work will begin tomorrow and is expected to take two days.

The drainage work should vastly improve the ground conditions in the cemetery over the winter period.

Posting on Facebook, the council say that they respectfully ask for the co-operation of members of the public by avoiding visiting whilst the work is being completed, and have apologised for any anxiety or inconvenience caused.
