It was an early start for the local baton bearers of the Birmingham 2022 Queen's Baton Relay yesterday morning, as they undertook the honour of carrying the Queen's Message through Saltburn and Redcar.
Local schoolchildren and members of the public lined the route of the baton as it passed through our area.
The local baton bearers were several of 2000, many of whom have close links with charities and have carried the the Queen's Baton throughout the countries of the Commonwealth before its 25 day trip around England.
Its final destination is the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games which are due to begin on 28th July.
Plans to replace three landmark Middlesbrough high rises with "new modern communities" have taken a step forward.
Milford House and Portland House in Brambles Farm were demolished last year after Thirteen Group said they were "no longer considered fit for purpose", based on "local needs" for more modern "affordable" housing.
The bulldozers also moved onto Jupiter Court in Pallister Park in December.
Plans were lodged to replace the tower blocks with 105 new, affordable homes in December 2020, but work has yet to start.
Now, more than 18 months on, an ecological mitigation plan for the sites has been submitted to Middlesbrough Council.
A planning statement for the "contemporary" mixed scheme, which will include bungalows and three-storey town houses, said the council had identified there was a "high level" of housing need and a "shortage of affordable housing" in the borough.
Schoolchildren from across Redcar and Cleveland are being invited to a performance by the Grenadier Guards and the Coldstream Guards Corps of Drums, live outside of Tuned In! on Redcar seafront next week.
The event, which is taking place next Wednesday 20 July is designed to introduce the children to the Corps drum school based at Catterick Garrison with the possibility of creating a young people’s Corps of Drums band in Redcar and Cleveland.
Residents are also welcome to attend the event which will see the Grenadier and Coldstream Guards perform outside Tuned In! at 7.00pm.
