An unexpected power cut has left thousands of homes in the dark yesterday evening.

Northern Powergrid has confirmed the electricity went down in parts of Middlesbrough yesterday evening.

The electrical distribution company confirmed 2,125 properties in the TS5 and TS8 postcode were affected by the unplanned power cut which occurred at around 5.10pm.

Residents reported lights flickering in their properties while others experienced full power cuts.

It's understood that Northern Powergrid restored power to the majority of affected homes by around 7pm.

Businesses across South Bank have received a coding kit to deter thieves and help recover stolen property.

Businesses in the South Bank area have received a SelectaDNA kit, a forensic marking system designed to reduce theft by coding valuable possessions with unique synthetic DNA and using warning labels and signs to show that the property is protected.

Any goods that are marked with the liquid can easily be traced and returned to their owners when they are recovered by police. The scheme is supported locally by signs promoting the use of SelectaDNA which aims to act as a deterrent to opportunist burglars and is an important first line of defence to warn criminals that DNA marking is being used on items of value at the property.

It is hoped that the scheme may be able to successfully reduce the number of burglaries in areas where forensic marking has been used as a deterrent.

A local park has received a rejuvenating boost thanks to the efforts of volunteers from our area.

Rainbow Park on High Street West in Coatham, Redcar has recently been transformed, with the fitting of new equipment and graphics to brighten it up, made possible thanks to a successful application by Zetland Pride to Impetus Environmental Trust who awarded the group £10,000.00 to carry out the work in partnership with Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council.

The upgrades have improved the equipment and aesthetics at Rainbow Park for the local children to enjoy.

Successful funding bids to develop and improve other parks in Redcar & Cleveland have been made recently to help transform Zetland Park, Locke Park and Borough Park.
