A big increase in the number of new Covid cases has pushed the infection rate in Redcar and Cleveland to the highest recorded level since the start of the pandemic.

There have been 824 new cases in the past seven days, which means the infection rate is now 601 per 100,000 of population.

The previous high was 507 last November.

Although the link between infection and hospitalisation has been weakened, admissions to James Cook University Hospital are beginning to rise once again.

If you are eligible for the Covid vaccination, you are advised to get both doses as soon as possible to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Two men have been charged following an alleged incident in Redcar.

The alleged incident occurred in the early hours of last Thursday on Mulgrave Walk in the town.

The men, both aged 20, have been charged with attempted burglary with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm and section 18 GBH.

Additionally, one of the men is also charged with possession of an offensive weapon.

Both appeared in court on Saturday.

A third male aged 22 remains in police custody on suspicion of attempted aggravated burglary and obstructing a constable in the execution of their duty.

Police are appealing for information following a two in one burglary.
