Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has today (21 June) revealed that demolition of all major steelmaking facilities at the former Redcar Steelworks will start within a matter of weeks, with a commitment that every structure will be down within a year.

The first phase of the work has been taking place since the Teesworks site was launched last July and already 691 good-quality, well-paid jobs have been created.

The pace of demolition across the site will now be accelerated so that the land is investor-ready faster and jobs for local workers can be delivered sooner. The work will see all of the old iron and steelmaking plants demolished, with contracts for their demolition appointed by August and work beginning on 2 August. It is expected more than 1,000 workers will be on-site over the next 12 months to carry out the work.

The news comes just days after it was announced plans had been submitted to Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council for GE Renewable Energy's giant, offshore wind blade manufacturing facility.

Police in Redcar are asking members of the public for information, CCTV or dashcam footage following a report of a robbery at a shop in Grangetown.

At around 11.33am yesterday a man wearing a balaclava and dark clothing is reported to have entered the 'Greetings from Talkabout' store at Fabian Court.

The man is reported to have been carrying some kind of bladed article and demanded cash before running off.

Officers immediately attended and cordoned off the area earlier today as they carried out enquiries.

Anyone who saw a man acting suspiciously in the area before 11.30am or witnessed any part of this incident is asked to call police on the non-emergency number 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

A raft of ambitious proposals totalling nearly £40m have been submitted to Government by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, to help deliver major capital regeneration projects across the area.

The two bids to Government include bids to redevelop Redcar central station, Guisborough town centre, new leisure facilities in Eston, and many other local projects.

Around £600m is being released by Government in the first round of funding from an overall pot of £4.8bn.

All bids for the first round of funding had to be submitted by yesterday with the decision likely to be made on the bids in the autumn.
