A court has heard how a teenager took a cocktail of drugs before taking his mother's Range Rover and crashing into a block of flats.

18-year-old Jake Clarke had been on a night out in Newcastle with his friends before crashing the vehicle into a bottom floor flat at Teesside Lodge on Marton Road just before 6am on 27th September last year.

One man, who was sleeping in the flat, was taken to James Cook University Hospital as a result of the collision.

The court heard how Mr Clarke was of previous good character with no previous convictions.

He was given a 12-month community order and 180 hours of unpaid work.

He must also complete five rehabilitation activity requirement days and pay a £385 court bill.

He was also disqualified from driving for 18-months.

A week of outdoor activity and support tools will be on offer throughout Redcar and Cleveland next week, in support of mental health awareness week which begins on Monday.

Throughout the week, the Council together with its partners, will be promoting mental wellbeing with residents able to book on a range of free outdoor activities, ranging from nature trails to guided cycle rides and art in the park through to caring for garden wildlife and wild herbs for wellbeing.

The theme for mental health awareness week this year is nature which was chosen by the Mental Health Foundation because it is known to be an effective way of tackling mental health problems and protecting our wellbeing.
