Residents of Redcar and Cleveland are being praised for their huge effort as Covid-19 infection rates continue to fall in the borough – but people are being urged to keep sticking to the rules to reduce infections further.

Redcar and Cleveland had 249 positive cases in the past seven days, meaning the current infection rate for our area is 182 cases per 100,000 of population.

This infection rate has fallen significantly from the post-Christmas high of 472 cases per 100,000 of population.

There are two testing facilities within the borough which offer Covid-19 lateral flow testing for people who do not have any coronavirus symptoms.

These are based at Loftus Youth and Community Centre and Redcar Leisure Centre.

More than 4,700 residents have received a lateral flow test so far, with just over 50 people testing positive.

Three people have been arrested in connection with damage which occurred to a police vehicle in Redcar.

Officers from the Redcar and Eston Neighbourhood Police Teams have arrested a man aged 22 on suspicion of criminal damage.

The man was arrested at a property on Micklow Close in Redcar after a police vehicle was reportedly damaged on the same street on Tuesday.

CS spray and a motorbike which is believed to have been ridden with no insurance was also seized from the property.

Following the arrest, two further men aged 20 and 21 were also arrested in connection with the damaged police vehicle.

They were all taken into police custody.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Cleveland Police on the non-emergency number 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The 21-year-old man was taken into custody after being arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary and four counts of burglary dwelling and theft.

The arrest took place on Redcar High Street yesterday morning.

The arrest was reportedly made in connection with a number of burglaries and bike thefts in the area.
