It's been revealed that Redcar could be a pilot area for a mass covid-19 testing scheme - with the army being called upon to carry out tests, according to a council leader.

Councillor Mary Lanigan, leader of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, revealed the plan at a meeting of councillors on Wednesday.

She said the town was one of three pilot areas chosen, although it has yet be officially confirmed by the Government.

The total number of Teesside coronavirus cases have surged past 12,000 after the biggest 24-hour increase so far during mass testing.

Figures released by Public Health England yesterday showed that a total of 570 new confirmed covid cases have been recorded on Teesside.

Of that number, 248 were recorded in Stockton alone, whilst Middlesbrough recorded 120 further cases.

Here in Redcar and Cleveland there were a further 114 recorded cases.

Police have seized a vehicle which was being driven illegally in our area.

On Tuesday night, officers from the Redcar Neighbourhood Team seized a Nissan vehicle on Churchill Drive in Marske.

The driver was reported for driving the vehicle without insurance.
