Petrochemicals firm SABIC is having to halt operations on its Olefins (pron "Oh-le-fins") Six plant in our area for up to 14 days due to technical problems.

An unplanned shutdown is due to take place from today, due to essential repairs required on its cooling tower. The shutdown will result in peak flaring this morning, followed by lower levels of background flaring over several days, until the plant starts up again.

SABIC say that flaring is an essential safety mechanism, and allow the quick and safe disposal of unused gases when production plants suffer process interruptions.

They say they will be working to minimise the duration and intensity of the flaring as far as possible.

Motorists in Redcar are facing another day of diversion as one of the main town centre routes remains closed.

Since the weekend, West Dyke Road has been closed at the level crossing due to a defective level crossing gate, and a signed diversion route is in place.

Now engineers have said that due to the severity of the damage and the availability of parts, the crossing is not expected to be repaired until at least tomorrow.

The diversions will remain in place until the road is reopened.

Ambititious plans to transform Loftus High Street have been revealed.

Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council has unveiled its vision for the town as part of its multi-million-pound bid for the Government’s Future High Streets Fund.

Proposed designs, and a fly-through video, show the exciting plans to create a new market square to hold year-round events, as well as delivering more business space and homes, more and better car parking, and a modern facility for the relocation of Loftus Library.

Residents are being encouraged to have their say on the proposals before the bid is submitted in July.

You can view the fly-through video on the Zetland FM Facebook page.
