The number of Coronavirus cases in our area has again shown an increase in the last 24 hours.

According to the latest figures published yesterday by Public Health England, there are currently 112 confirmed cases in Redcar and Cleveland, out of a local population of just under 137,000 people.

That's up from 100 cases on Friday.

There are currently 169 cases confirmed in Middlesbrough, a figure which has again risen sharply, up from 151 yesterday.

A fire at a plastics plant is continuing to burn more than 48 hours after flames dramatically lit up the night sky in an East Cleveland village.

Fire crews remain at the Greenology Plastic Recycling Centre in Liverton Mines, more than two days after the fire started on Sunday.

Police have now issued advice to residents to remain indoors, as a change in wind direction sends black smoke from the fire back into the village.

It comes as a community effort to protect vulnerable villagers continued yesterday.

SABIC have again apologised to local residents after continued flaring overnight.

Following the unplanned shutdown of Olefins 6 on Sunday, SABIC say significant progress has been made on restarting the plant.

Flaring was expected to reduce during yesterday afternoon and evening and continue at the reduced level through the night as the plant conditioning continues.

In a statement, SABIC say that they appreciate that this is a challenging time and that they apologise for the disturbance caused to those living around the Wilton Site.

They said they would like to assure all residents that the Olefins 6 team is doing everything it can to regain normal plant operation, as quickly as it safely can.
