New flood defence works protecting the Saltburn Miniature Railway and surrounding woodlands against flooding from Skelton Beck have been praised.

The £50,000 project saw a flood defence system and embankment retaining structure installed a long a 50 metre stretch of the beck. The works have been designed to use wooden logs as part of the structure and to mask the internal steel works to maintain the natural appearance of the woodlands.

Robert Proctor chair of Saltburn Miniature Railway, told Zetland FM he thinks it’s an extremely fine piece of civil engineering work that has been carried out and they are very pleased with the outcome.

Intruders attempted to steal cash machines and tills from Redcar Racecourse after driving down the track and cutting through fencing.

The Petch Stand was broken into in the early hours of Wednesday morning and the cash machine and cash tills vandalised.

Fortunately, the would-be thieves left empty-handed thanks to effective security measures which were in place.

No cash is left on the site when racing is not taking place and the buildings have intruder alarms which are linked directly to the police, who were quickly on the scene.

Damage was caused to the building, with windows broken to access the building, but, thankfully, nothing was stolen.

A former mayor is almost half way through a challenge to sleep out rough at eleven cenotaphs in East Cleveland.

Barry Hunt began the challenge last Wednesday, and we caught up with him last night at the cenotaph in Lingdale.
