Boards have gone up around Redcar’s Regent Cinema as workers begin the task of removing from the building.
The cinema closed its doors in April after a routine inspection discovered structural problems.
A more in-depth survey then found serious defects and faults, prompting Redcar and Cleveland Council to close it indefinitely.
The council says the asbestos removal is expected to take around two weeks, however at this stage they have been unable to give an exact time frame for the work to be completed.
Rail passengers in our area are once again facing disruption to train services today due to rail strikes.
Passengers travelling on Northern Rail services between Saltburn and Middlesbrough, and on the Esk Valley line to Whitby will be affected by the strike action by the transport workers union the RMT.
A number of trains have been cancelled and others reduced as a result of the industrial action.
Normal timetables are being replaced by others to reflect the change during strike days, meaning many services will be starting later and finishing earlier.
The timetables in operation during the strike period can be accessed via the Northern Rail website, https:// www.northernrailway.co.uk/strike
Police are holding two free property marking events in our area this week.

The service is provided free of charge.
