The Conservatives have won an extra seat on Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council after victory in a local by-election.

Vera Rider was elected as councillor for Longbeck after independent Mike Findley MBE resigned.

Mr Findley has been fighting motor neurone disease since 2005.

The victory means that the Labour minority council is now made up of 28 Labour councillors, 11 Conservatives, 11 Liberal Democrats and 10 independents.

The Conservatives secured 494 votes, the Liberal Democrats 397 while Labour were third with 337.

The turnout was 28%.

Local residents are being advised to prepare for a wintery weekend across our area.

It is predicted to be a wintry weekend, with gritting teams from Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council treating primary routes in the south of the borough from 5pm yesterday evening.

All primary routes throughout the borough were then treated again at 10pm tonight.

Motorists are advised to take extra care and time if you are heading out and about in the borough over the weekend.

Local football team Marske United are getting ready for what could be Teesside's Non-League Football match of the season.

Later today the "Seasiders" take on Stockton Town in the Buildbase FA Vase semi-final first leg at Stockton.

The venue for the match had to be changed as Marske United's home ground, the GER Stadium, is waterlogged.

The match follows Marske United's 3-0 win over Bracknell Town.

A win today will give the team a vital advantage in the second leg which is taking place next week.
