Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has publicly backed Government plans to ban letting fees for tenants.

The Government's draft bill will set out its approach to banning rip-off letting fees, which will benefit Tees Valley's 50,000 private renters by bringing an end to costly upfront payments and hidden costs.

The ban also extends to third parties, meaning agents cannot require tenants to pay another company to carry out an inventory, for example.

Plans for a letting fee ban were first announced by Chancellor Philip Hammond in his November 2016 autumn statement, with the draft legislation published on Wednesday.

The draft bill will also cap security deposits at no more than six week's rent.
