A 36-year-old man from the Redcar area is due to appear in court today charged with attempted murder.

On Monday Cleveland Police launched an appeal to trace 36-year-old Barry Francis Gardener, after an alleged assault in the Coatham area of the town in the early hours of Friday.

He was located a few hours later and has now been charged with attempted murder.

Gardener, of Cleveland Street in Redcar, will appear at Teesside Magistrates Court later today.

Tributes have been paid to Mary Reveley, one of the most successful female horse-racing trainers, after she collapsed and died at her family’s stables.

The 76-year-old, who trained more than 2000 winners, died on Monday just days after becoming a great-grandmother.

Mary began her career training hunter chasers, and she had just four horses when she took out a licence at her Lingdale stables in 1982.

She quickly excelled under both codes of racing before passing the licence to her son Keith in 2004.

In 1991 Mary became the first woman to saddle 100 winners in a calendar year, and she made further history the following year when becoming the first female trainer to win 50 races in a flat season.
