Redcar Athletic enjoyed another away day victory in the Wearside Football League, helped by Andy Jennings' brace, on Saturday.

By Andrew McElvaney

Redcar Athletic started confidently and in the 2nd minute they came close to taking the lead when Andy Jennings raced onto Michael Woodhouse's curled ball over the top of the Whitehaven defence to meet it in the penalty area but he fired his shot into left hand outside netting of the goal. On 7 minutes Andy Jennings fed the ball through to Sam Webster, who let fly with a vicious rising left foot shot from 20 yards which stung Whitehaven keeper Tom Fowler's fingers as he reacted to it and kept the scores level. Redcar Athletic were given a great opportunity to take the lead on 28 minutes when as Andy Jennings ran into the box to meet Lewis Wood's cross from the right he was brought down by a reckless challenge from Whitehaven's Piotr Krol. ANDY JENNINGS stepped up to take the penalty and despite slipping to the ground as he kicked it the ball flew into the back of the net with keeper Tom Fowler diving in the opposite direction.

Redcar Athletic thought they had doubled the lead on 32 minutes when Lewis Wood headed in a Robbie Farrier cross at the right hand post but the referee disallowed it despite no pleas from the Whitehaven defence, saying Wood had fouled a defender when jumping to meet the cross. Just 3 minutes later, in the 35th minute Robbie Farrier curled a high free kick into the area and this time the crossbar came to Whitehaven's rescue as Andy Jennings rose and planted a thunderous header onto it. But within 60 seconds later there wasn't to be a reprieve as another Robbie Farrier free kick into the area was this time met with a spectacular powerful diving header into the net by LEWIS WOOD. Out of the blue just 2 minutes later Whitehaven reduced the deficit back to 1 with a sweeping move when Kevin Holliday won the ball in his own half, played a great pass forward for Liam Stamp and his low cross into the area was met with a neat side footed finish by GREG QUAYLE.

Although Whitehaven improved in the 2nd half, Redcar Athletic keeper Matthew Berry was all but a virtual spectator during that 45 minute period. In the 54th minute Andy Jennings curled the ball over the top for Michael Woodhouse to race onto and he neatly chipped the keeper from 20 yards only to watch in disbelief as it crashed against the middle of the Whitehaven crossbar before being booted clear by a defender.

Despite all the pressure and possession of the ball it took until the 87th minute before Redcar Athletic were finally able to put the game to bed. What a comedy of errors it was as Andy Jennings who broke into the box, was denied by a good save from keeper Tom Fowler, who could only parry the ball into the path of Michael Woodhouse who could only his shot straight against defender Craig Johnston, who in turn in a panic booted his attempted clearance against the prone keeper Tom Fowler's back cannoning the ball back into the path of ANDY JENNINGS, who was now in front of an open goal and couldn't believe his luck in being able to add another to his tally.
