TJFA Thursday 17th September

A fairly good start to the season with no fewer than 315 matches played at the weekend. Some fantastic football played with the vast majority of games played in precisely the right spirit.

We'll start our look back to the weekend in the Under 12 fourth division where promoted Eaglescliffe Elementis "Blue" played hosts to Bishop Auckland St. Mary's "Aces" with Elementis getting off to a flying start securing a 7-3 win. Harry Close, last seasons top goalscorer in the whole of the League, appears to have found his shooting boots again and he managed to score four times, with Charlie Stewart-Titchiner scoring twice and Simon Walters netting their seventh. The goals for Bishop Auckland "Aces" from Declan Trotter, who scored twice, and Neil Vickers. A great start to the season for Eaglescliffe Elementis.

In the same age group at Under 12, but this time in the fifth division, an excellent start made by a brand new Club to the League this season, as Whitby Fishermens made the relatively long journey up to Newton Aycliffe Youth "Falcons" a worthwhile one, eventually coming away with all three points following a 3-1 win. The Newton Aycliffe "Falcons" goal scored by Liam Horner, but two strikes from Whitby's Matthew Wignall and a third from Marshall Kelly made the long all-round trip more bearable and this was a great start made by the Whitby based youngsters.

The high profile local derby played in the Under 14 fourth division across at Mo Mowlem Park in Redcar between Redcar Town "Whites" and Redcar Athletic saw Redcar Athletic claim the bragging rights with a 3-0 victory. A tremendous start for the Redcar Athletic side who only narrowly lost out on the Championship last season to their rivals in this game. The Redcar Athletic goals on Sunday were scored by Harry Barnard, Joshua Bennett and Luke Richardson.

The TJFA Team of the Year from season 14/15, Nunthorpe Athletic, also had an excellent start to their campaign in the Under 18 top flight, as they travelled up to Hartlepool to play a very good Greatham FC "A" and emerged with all three points following a narrow 3-2 win. The goals for Greatham from Liam Measor and Jack Walls, but two strikes from Kevin Hayes and a third from Daniel Maddison enough to earn the visitors all three points in an exciting game to start off the season in this division.

Obviously, with hundreds of matches played each week, it is impossible to give everyone a mention here, but we'll try and spread the reports out to capture the majority of the competing Clubs as the season continues.

More excitement in store this coming weekend with the start of the TJFA League Cup for most teams, with just a scattering of League matches for some of the teams not initially involved in that Competition.

We'll start in the Under 13 with a great looking first round tie between two very accomplished top flight sides as Spraire Lads "A" welcome the Marton FC "White" team across to Darlington. Both sides made very good starts to their League campaign last weekend with Marton FC knocking in seven goals and Spraire Lads hitting four to make this a potentially mouth-watering Cup match at the weekend. Two very good sides on display across at Hall Drive, in a match which should kick off around 10:30am and this has to be given my vote as the match of the weekend.

Another cracking looking Cup tie is being played in a bit of a local derby in the Under 14 first round as Northallerton Juniors make the short journey across to Thirsk to play the Thirsk Falcons "Blue" team. Thirsk made a winning start in the second division with a narrow 3-2 win in the League last week, whilst, in the same division, Northallerton lost to a very useful Middleton Rangers outfit. This Cup tie could be really close and should be a great advert for the game on Sunday. The match is scheduled to kick-off around 1:30pm.

Boro' Rangers from the Under 16 first division face a potential banana-skin in the second round of the League Cup Competition as they make the journey up to Hartlepool to take on the fourth division St. Francis side. Boro' Rangers opened their League campaign with a 3-3 draw but St. Francis, although a number of divisions below their visitors, were busy scoring for fun last Sunday knocking in ten goals in their League opener. Boro' Rangers will be favourites to progress, but St. Francis are sure to let them know they have a game on their hands and won't go down without a fight. Another 1:30 kick-off.

Finally for this coming Sunday, this time in the Under 12 age group and another great looking fixture between two sides who both made winning starts in the League in their respective divisions last weekend. Stockton West End, who scored five without reply in the fourth division last Sunday, play hosts to Nunthorpe Athletic from the second division who also kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win in their opener. A really tough looking game to guess the outcome of and it may be that just an odd goal separates these two sides at the final whistle. This match is scheduled as a 10:30am kick-off.

So, as usual, much to look forward to right across the area in our second playing week of the season.
