WEARSIDE LEAGUE: Athletic made to work for latest success!
Redcar Athletic had to come from behind in a stunning second half battle, in the Wearside League, on Tuesday.

Hosts Harton and Westoe stunned Redcar Athletic in the 2nd minute when Daniel Lydon was sent clear down the right wing and his low ball into the area was met with a neat flicked finish across past keeper Matthew Berry into the far left hand side of the net by SHAUN HEADS. Redcar Athletic levelled the scores up quickly, when in the 6th minute Joe Ferguson's free kick into the home side's penalty area picked out Joe Bennett and his tap-on across the 6 yard box was stabbed into the net by MICHAEL WOODHOUSE. In the 12th minute Harton and Westoe regained the lead when with the Redcar Athletic defence vainly appealing for offside the ball was allowed to travel across the face of the penalty area and DANIEL LYDON fired a low hard drive into the net. Redcar Athletic had a great opportunity to equalise 2 minutes later when when James Swann dribbled his way into the area to set up a chance for Sam Webster, who was firstly denied by keeper Ben Cooper and then when the ball rebounded back to him blasted it over the bar.
It looked like that miss was going to be costly as in the 17th minute with a static Redcar Athletic defence appealling vainly again for offside SHAUN HEADS sprinted clear before burying a low, fierce shot into the bottom right corner of the net. It almost got totally catostrophic for Redcar Athletic in the 27th minute when they allowed Joshua Rodgers all the time he wanted with the ball some 35 yards out from goal , so he chanced his arm with an audacious lob which over the backtracking keeper Matthew Berry but crashed against the crossbar.
This near-miss made Redcar Athletic totally change their tactics by swapping around players positions. This began to work almost immediately and Redcar Athletic piled the pressure on to get back into the match. In the 38th minute Sam Webster dribbled his way into the Harton and Westoe penalty area along the by-line and was brought down by Connor Vasey. ANDY JENNINGS has not missed from the penalty spot since taking over the duties and he pinged his effort low past to the left of keeper Ben Cooper for his 50th goal of the season and keeping his 100% spot kick record intact.

Redcar Athletic started the 2nd half all guns blazing and were level in the game within 3 minutes when Joe Bennett picked out Joe Blackburn's run down the right wing and his cross was perfect for ANDY JENNINGS to meet with a simple well placed header into the right hand side of the net. Harton and Westoe were totally pinned in their half throughout the 2nd half as Redcar Athletic's pressure was relentless. Redcar Athletic finally got their noses in front in the 74th minute when Joe Blackburn's low ball across the penalty from the right picked out MICHAEL WOODHOUSE and he drilled a low shot into the net for his 30th goal of the season. In the 80th minute it was 5-3 to Redcar Athletic when Joe Blackburn picked out Michael Woodhouse on the edge of the area, who played played it short to his left to ANDY JENNINGS, who turned his marker before hammering home a shot into the right hand side of the net. That was to be Andy Jennings swansong of the season as he was then replaced by substitute Chris Atkinson. Within 5 minutes CHRIS ATKINSON was on the scoresheet himself when after Sam Webster's cross from the left went right across the Harton and Westoe penalty area to the right wing, Joe Blackburn's cross back into the area was met with a bullet header into the net from 12 yards out by the substitute.
