Redcar Athletic stay top of the Wearside League after Sam Webster's goal edged a five-goal thriller, at Green Lane, on Saturday.

By Andrew McElvaney

This was a hard fought game with chances to score difficult to come across as both sides defences performed well in snuffing out the majority of attacks. Redcar Athletic had the better of a fairly equal 1st half and Joe Ferguson was denied putting them ahead in the 9th minute when his 30 yard free kick was fingertipped over the cross bar by Richmond Town keeper Karl Latcham. In the 29th minute Lewis Wood sprung the offside trap to break clear down the left and although he was tackled on the edge of the area, he won the ball back, then lifted a cross over for CHRIS ATKINSON to squeeze a header just inside the right hand post and tantalisingly out of the reach of keeper of keeper Latcham to put Redcar Athletic ahead.

Richmond Town should have equalised in the 56th minute when Michael Layfield's cross from the right picked out a totally unmarked Scott Ryan coming in behind the Redcar Athletic but he made a complete hash of his header by putting it well wide of the gaping goal. However just 8 minutes later the game was all square when a ball through the middle saw SCOTT RYAN win the race for the ball with Redcar Athletic defenders and keeper Matthew Berry coming out his area before placing a shot under the now diving keeper from 25 yards out, into the now unguarded net. Immediately from the kick off the ball was played forward to Andy Jennings, who burst into the right hand side of the Richmond Town area before drilling in a fierce low shot which keeper Karl Latcham did well to parry away at full stretch, only for it to land in the path of SAM WEBSTER, who calmly side footed the ball into the net to restore Redcar Athletic's lead just 20 seconds after they had lost it. Despite both teams having a number of forays into their opponents penalty areas neither defence allowed another shot on target for the remaining 25 minutes, which allowed Redcar Athletic to chalk up yet another 3 points to add to their already club record points haul.
