A round up of Local News in Redcar and Cleveland for 29th February 2016

A young woman was seriously injured at the weekend when the horse she was riding on Saltburn beach collapsed and fell on her.

The air ambulance was called to the scene just before 1 o'clock on Saturday lunchtime and the woman was flown to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. She is reported to have spinal and pelvis injuries.

It is believed the horse sadly died.

A member of Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team who was walking on the beach with his wife at the time was first on scene to assist the woman.

A local coastguard officer, who also happened to be walking on the beach at the time, also gave assistance and administered first aid to the woman and alterted the ambulance and coastguard services.

The fire brigade were called to a large blaze on Huntcliff in Saltburn yesterday evening.

More than 300 hay bales caught fire at Brough House Farm at around 5pm yesterday afternoon. The blaze was visible for miles around, including from Marske and Redcar.

An appliance from Saltburn fire station attended the scene, and firefighters also used an emergency 4x4 vehicle to assess and tackle the blaze.

The cause of the fire, which continued throughout yesterday evening, is not yet known.

The fire was expected to continue burning into this morning, and crews remained on protective standby overnight last night to allow for the hay to burn out safely.

Redcar Athletic continued their run of form with a victory at Whitehaven on Saturday.

Andy Jennings slotted home a penalty for Redcar in the first half, and with further goals from Lewis Wood and another from Andy Jennings in the second half, the final score saw Athletic win the game 3-1.

Meanwhile, Guisborough Town gained a hard-fought 2-1 victory against local derby rivals Norton & Stockton Ancients.

The win keeps the Priorymen in second spot in the league but teams just below them - notably Marske and Newton Aycliffe, are pressing strongly with games in hand while leaders Shildon consolidated their 13 point lead at the top with a crushing 5-0 win at West Allotment Celtic.
