A round up of Local News in Redcar and Cleveland for 15th February 2016

Wintry conditions have made driving difficult in our area across the weekend and into this morning.

Snow and blizzard conditions affected a large part of our area yesterday afternoon, with the A171 from Swans Corner, Birkbrow and the moor road badly affected, as well as routes around Stokesley and parts of Middlesbrough.

A motorist had a lucky escape after their car finished on it's side after sliding in snow on the road between Nunthorpe and Great Ayton at Treebridge yesterday afternoon.

There were also reports of snow being blown across the carriageway affecting visability on the A19.

A yellow warning of snow remains in place from the Met Office through until midday today with forecasters predicting that ice will be a hazard on untreated surfaces, particularly following showers overnight.

They also warned temperatures will feel “bitterly cold” today in the wind.

Meanwhile a key route between Guisborough and Redcar was closed for almost three hours yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services attended the B1269 on Yearby Bank around 2pm after a car overturned and left the road.

Two Ambulances, Police and the the Air Ambulance attended the scene of the crash and the road was closed for around 3 hours.

Injuries haven't been disclosed at this stage.

Redcar’s Kirkleatham Owl Centre have introduced a new and unusual animal to the public for the first time.

Imelda is a Palawan Binturong, and has a face similar to a cat, and body like a bear, with long, shaggy black hair, stiff whiskers and a tail which as long as her body. She also smells like popcorn, and likes to hang upside down by her tail.

Imelda has been at the centre in Kirkleatham for several months, but is now being shown off in public for the first time.

Once she is fully settled in, Imelda will join the outreach team at the centre, which means she will be visiting schools in our area for educational sessions, and will also be taking part in Encounter sessions at the centre itself.

You can see Imelda, along with the rest of the animals and birds, at the Kirkleatham Owl Centre centre this half term.

Redcar Athletic are celebrating after an impressive win against Whitehaven at the weekend.

Athletic beat the Havens 6-nil in the Wearside League Cup 1st round match, opening the scoring after only 65 seconds courtesy of Andy Jennings.

Goals from Lewis Wood in the 26th minute, and Sam Webster in the 42nd put Redcar 3-nil up at half time.

In the second half, a scissor-kick goal from Chris Atkinson and two further goals from Lewis Wood secured a personal hat-trick for him, as well as a well-deserved 6-nil victory for the Redcar club.
