Victims of floods in Redcar and Cleveland are being urged to apply for a Repair & Renew Grant to defend properties and businesses in the future.

The fund, administered by the Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, allows anyone that had their home or businesses flooded between April 1, 2013 and March 31, 2014 to request funding.

The grant, which could be of up to £5,000, would be used to fund flood resilience or resistance measures to better stop a building being flooded.

There are strict guidelines on who can apply for the grant. Only houses or premises flooded internally because of adverse weather are eligible for funding.

Properties flooded as a result of burst water mains, failure of a sewage system, or internal water pipe failure are not covered by the grant unless this was the result of severe weather.

The grant, should a person be successful in their application, will enable Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council contribute up to £5,000 towards the cost of flood protection items. The grant is directly paid to contracters.

Any works that are over £5,000 in total would need the additional costs over this sum to be funded by the person themselves.

While the money would cover the future installation of flood gates and other flood resilience measures, it can't be used for replacement of furnishings such as: carpets, curtains and furniture.

Councillor Helen McLuckie, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said:

"The council would urge as many residents or businesses affected by flooding during the period of April 1 2013 to March 31 2014 to submit an application for a Repair & Renew Grant.

"The flooding of 2013/14 impacted on the lives of many of our residents and disrupted many of the businesses that call our borough home. Hopefully, this money can fund flood defences that will keep homes and premises safe for years to come."
