A veteran who has devoted decades of his life to serving the British Legion, has been recognised as a community champion by the Prime Minister at a Downing Street reception.
The Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, welcomed Redcar's Eric Howden and his wife, June, to Downing Street on Wednesday.
Eric was nominated for a Community Champion Award in recognition of his tireless efforts to support his fellow veterans by the MP for Redcar, Jacob Young.
The 78-year-old served in the British Army before retiring in 1970 and joining the British Legion. Working as a volunteer, Eric has been a key figure in supporting The British Legion's mission to provide support to serving and ex-serving personnel and their families.
Having been involved with the Redcar Branch of the British Legion for over 50 years, Eric has held numerous positions including Branch Chairman, Poppy Appeal Organiser, and Standard Bearer.
He has also been heavily involved in organizing and participating in local Remembrance Day events, and was instrumental in establishing the Redcar War Memorial.
