It's being reported that Redcar and Cleveland Council may have to pick up a hefty bill from an incident which left a main sewer pipe damaged leading to the closure of a popular seafront car park in our area.
Major repair work has been carried out by Northumbrian Water at the Cat Nab car park, on the Lower Foreshore at Saltburn, after an external contractor employed by the council accidentally went through the pipe on February 23.
The car park had to be cordoned off after the damage caused sewage to spew onto a nearby beach with members of the public being warned to stay away.
The car park has been out of action since, whilst engineering work has been carried out by the utility firm.
Northumbrian Water has confirmed to the Local Democracy Reporting Service that it plans to recover its costs from the responsible party, which could run to a six-figure sum.
This may mean the council, which owns and operates the car park, may have to stump up, although it could conceivably attempt to claim from the contractor involved.
It is understood the unnamed company had been carrying out excavations associated with a planned extension of the car park, which was granted planning permission in January.
Student police officers swapped Powerpoints for pursuit yesterday when their lesson was disrupted by an incident involving a suspected stolen vehicle.
Officers from the roads policing unit were in pursuit of a suspected stolen Renault Megane in North Ormesby yesterday afternoon, when it made its way onto Borough Road towards the university buildings, then collided with a car and a bus as it turned onto Albert Road. Fortunately, no one was injured.
A male made off from the vehicle, and noticing a commotion outside, the student officers and their Police Educator took action and chased after the suspect on foot alongside the officers from the roads policing unit.
A 35-year-old man was detained on Borough Road and was arrested on suspicion of a number of driving offences.
A 28-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.
Both men have since been released under investigation whilst enquiries continue.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council have apologised to residents in Guisborough after issues with waste collection yesterday.
Waste and recycling wagon crews suffered a number of setbacks yesterday caused by a couple of breakdowns and the loss of another vehicle which was involved in a collision.
Thankfully, no-one was hurt but it meant not all garden waste collections could be made in some parts of Guisborough - however a crew will be back today.
The affected areas are:
• Trees Estate
• Helmsley Drive
• Maple Gardens
• Park Lane
• Cobbled areas and tight streets near the centre of the town
The council say that they have cleared all collections of household and recycling and a crew will be re-visiting these areas today.
The council have apologised for any inconvenience caused, and thanked the public for their continued support.
