The public health chief for our area has called for people to take a covid test before attending Christmas parties and nativity plays this year.

The plea comes after the government reintroduced face masks in shops and on public transport in England as concern rises over Omicron, the new Covid variant.

South Tees ’ public health chief Mark Adams said that lateral flow tests are widely available, and they are very good at spotting when you’re infectious.

He also advised people that they should wear masks and keep their distance in crowded spaces where they can.

A scheme to give young people unemployed or not in education a chance has been hailed a major success – and now more opportunities are planned.

The Kickstart programme gives out-of-work 16 to 24-year-olds a total of six months employment and also training and support to help them secure a full-time job.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council took on 30 young people earlier this year on the Government-backed scheme and 20 have now gained employment either at the authority or elsewhere.

Just last week a further 14 young people were taken on and now 34 council managers have agreed to offer more positions in January and February.

Those employment opportunities will be advertised through the Job Centre in December.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's successful pop-up vaccine clinic surpassed expectation after almost a thousand people turned up on Monday.

The team, supported by the Northumbria Roving Vaccine Unit, based themselves at Redcar and Cleveland College, where they were inundated with people requesting jabs and boosters.

Most of the 951 jabs were booster injections. 50 flu vaccines were also administered.

The team will be back at it this Saturday 4 December at Grangetown United and Community Hub on Derwentwater Road from 8:45am – 5:30pm.
