Local taxi operators say that the trade is being hammered with massive fee increases after Redcar and Cleveland Council put forward plans to increase licence fees.

The proposed price increases will affect hackney carriage vehicles, along with private hire vehicles and operators.

The changes mean that, for example, the cost of renewing a hackney carriage taxi licence will increase by £30 from £240 to £270, while renewing a private hire taxi licence will go up from £235 to £265.

Members of the council’s regulatory committee approved the new fees at the end of last month, which were subsequently advertised.

If any objections are received the matter will have to be referred back to the regulatory committee.

Members of the public in our area are being invited to a 'Safer Streets' surgery which is being held in South Bank today.

Between 2 and 3pm today officers at the Golden Boy Green police station will be available to give advice on police and council services.

Crime prevention advice will also be available.

The Safer Streets initiative aims to reduce neighbourhood crimes like thefts and burglaries, making residents safer.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council has announced proposals for redeveloping Coatham Seafront and is asking the public what they think of them.

The plans for Coatham Seafront include a new adventure play park, an 18 hole adventure golf course, new landscaping and improved parking.
