An officer who was confronted with a man who was making threats to the public in a busy town centre was assisted by helpful members of the public.

The officer came across the man on Corporation Road in Middlesbrough yesterday afternoon just after 3pm, who was making threats to members of the public in the area between British Home Stores and Fatso’s.

The officer intervened and his shoulder was dislocated during the incident. Members of the public who rushed to help the officer assisted until other officers arrived on the scene.

A 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of GBH and the officer was taken to James Cook University Hospital for treatment before being discharged.

Sergeant Graeme Reilly said: “We would like to thank those members of the public who witnessed what was happening yesterday and aided the officer. On behalf of the officer, who is now recovering from his injury, we would like to express our gratitude.”

The 45-year-old man has been released on bail pending further enquiries.
