Redcar and Cleveland Council says it welcomes confirmation by the Government of an independent review of its financial position.

An 'external assurance reviewer' will visit the authority to provide a detailed assessment of its finances and management by the end of the month and will make recommendations on where improvements can be made.

The Government says that eight councils - including Redcar and Cleveland - who had previously received "exceptional financial support" would be subject to an external assurance review.

In Redcar and Cleveland's case the review was one of the conditions the council had to agree to when it received a ring-fenced revenue grant worth £3.6m earlier this year intended to provide support towards the costs of recovering from a major cyber attack in February 2020.
