The latest daily Covid-19 data shows that 612 more Teessiders have tested positive for the virus.

The biggest jump was recorded in Stockton, with 240 fresh cases.

In Middlesbrough there were 143 new recorded cases, whilst here in Redcar and Cleveland there were a further 103.

An independent taskforce has recommended that Redcar's iconic blast furnace should be dismantled.

The heritage taskforce, set up by Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen, has concluded that the structure - which has overlooked Redcar since the late 1970s - should be pulled apart with any materials and artefacts of industrial architecture being salvaged for memorials or displays.

Campaigners from the Save our Steel Heritage group had opposed plans to demolish the furnace, and say they will fight on to preserve the heart of the furnace.

A petition against its demolition has now been set up.

Police have revealed that 248 people were arrested during a Christmas campaign across Cleveland and Durham to target drink and drug drivers.

The national Christmas drink and drug drive campaign took place from 1st December for around a month, to tackle those who get behind the wheel whilst under the influence.

Officers from the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit carried out the tests alongside colleagues from both Force Special Constabularies.

In Cleveland, there were 145 arrests made; 38 for drivers suspected of being over the limit for alcohol and 107 suspected of driving under the influence of drugs.
