A man has been arrested and an axe recovered after an incident in Redcar.

On Tuesday evening at around 7:30 police were called to a report of a group of mainly youths who were fighting outside Morrisons on Lord Street in Redcar.

One youth was seen on CCTV holding an axe which was reportedly disposed of in a bin.

A PCSO attended the scene and managed the group with the assistance of security staff from the store until officers from the response team arrived.

Police arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with the incident and he has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Cleveland Police on the non-emergency number 101.

 

An arson investigation has been launched after a car fire in Berwick Hills.

Police attended a report of a vehicle fire at around 11.30pm on Tuesday on Chadwell Avenue in Berwick Hills, where a white Vauxhall Astra had been set alight.

Local residents had to move their cars out of the way of the fire, which left the vehicle completely destroyed.

Cleveland Police said that officers are investigating the incident as arson and are appealing to anyone with information to contact them.
