The number of Coronavirus cases in our area has again shown an increase in the past 24 hours.

According to the latest figures published yesterday by Public Health England, there are currently 195 confirmed cases in Redcar and Cleveland, out of a local population of just under 137,000 people.

That's up from 184 cases yesterday.

There are currently 335 cases confirmed in Middlesbrough, a figure which has also risen, up from 302 yesterday.

A woman who harassed elderly people with door-to-door begging during the lockdown and spat at a shop worker has been sentenced.

39 year old Emma Richie, of Station Road in Redcar, caused anxiety to people in self-isolation by knocking on doors after dark and asking for money on the 30th March this year.

Richie also spat at a Morrisons employee in Redcar after he asked her to move on from the store.

She was given a suspended sentence at Teesside Magistrates' Court after admitting four offences.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson and is in police custody after a police van was set alight and destroyed.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening on Doxford Walk in Hemlington.

A local street warden saw the van on fire and called police around 7.10pm and Cleveland Fire Brigade attended to put out the blaze.

No-one was injured, as the two police officers working from the van were at an address in the area at the time of the fire.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Cleveland Police on the non-emergency number 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
