The number of Coronavirus cases in our area has again shown an increase in the last 24 hours.

According to the latest figures published yesterday by Public Health England, there are currently 84 confirmed cases in Redcar and Cleveland, out of a local population of just under 137,000 people.

That's up from 64 cases on Friday.

There are currently 126 cases confirmed in Middlesbrough, a figure which has again risen sharply, up from 92 yesterday.

Residents in our area have largely observed the governments advice to stay indoors at the weekend.

Despite the good weather, residents of Redcar and Cleveland remained indoors as per the instructions from the government.

Reports from Saltburn say that the beach was mainly empty, and the pier and promenade were also very quiet.

There were similar reports of empty streets in Redcar and Marske.

Firefighters have spent the night tackling a major blaze at an East Cleveland plastics recycling plant.

Eight fire applicances attended the scene of the fire at the Greenology Plastic Recycling Centre at Lantsbery Drive in Liverton Mines.

Thick black smoke could be seen for miles around coming from the blaze at the plastics recycling centre.

There were reports of it being clearly visible from as far away as Whitby with people in Peterlee, County Durham also reporting they could see it.

Cleveland Fire Brigade urged people to close their doors and windows after the fire broke out shortly before 10pm.
