The number of Coronavirus cases in our area has almost doubled over the weekend.

According to the latest figures published yesterday by Public Health England, there are currently 25 confirmed cases in Redcar and Cleveland, out of a local population of just under 137,000 people.

That's up from 13 cases on on Friday.

There are currently 26 cases confirmed in Middlesbrough, a figure which has also risen sharply over the weekend, up from 17 on Friday.

Cleveland Police say that they will continue take a common sense approach to new regulations designed to help police enforce protection during the coronavirus outbreak.

Under the powers given to police, no-one will be allowed to leave their home "without reasonable excuse" and officers can ensure that people stay at home, avoid non-essential travel, police will be able to order people to go home, leave an area or disperse.

While the new powers mean officers can issues fixed penalties and make arrests, police in Cleveland say that they are continuing to take an 'educate and persuade' approach using the new legislation as a last resort for non-compliance.

Cleveland Police say that within the past two days the force has issued eight fixed penalty notices.

Police have removed a vehicle from the road after it was involved in an incident in Loftus.

On Friday afternoon the silver Ford Focus failed to stop for Police.

Vehicle checks were carried out and showed no insurance.

The vehicle was therefore seized under police powers and taken away on the back of a low loader.
