Pirates, a steel band and Carmen Mirandas entertained families from across the region at Redcar Racecourse’s fourth Caribbean Carnival Day.

Over 4,500 people attended the event, which featured fancy dress competitions, Caribbean cocktails and stilt walkers alongside a packed race card. The fine summer weather contributed to the theme, beaming down on the hundreds of families who attended the seaside racecourse.

Amy Fair, general manager of Redcar Racecourse, said: “It's been a wonderful day. We’re really pleased to see such a good turnout and so many families are here with young children. The costumes keep getting better every year too!"

The racecourse ran a fancy dress competition for families who donned their pirate and Caribbean costumes for the day and Bobby Bosher from Sunderland who won race tickets for a forthcoming event said:

“I am amazed that I have won the tickets, my friends have won before, but I think my costume was hard to beat!”

The children didn’t miss out as all those who took part in the competition received a pirate lolly whilst the winner, Ben Williams from Darlington won a hamper full of sweets to take home.

The racecourse also treated four lucky racegoers to the VIP treatment after they won a package worth over £1000 as part of its social media campaign. Leanne Wilsden posted the winning photo of her dog Freddie the Beagle dressed as a pirate and said:

“We were away when we heard the news, but have come back early to come to the races. It is great to come together with my fiancé Paul for a special day together. It is a shame we couldn’t bring Freddie, but he has had a lovely long walk instead!”

The racecourse teamed up with local performing arts company Page2Stage to deliver the fun filled day which included teaching sea shanties and pirate lingo to the children as well as the crowd being entertained by the fabulous Paradise Steel Band.

The remainder of the 2014 season at Redcar has two more feature racedays; the Ladies’ & Gents’ evening on Saturday 23rd August, and the famous Two Year Old Trophy on Saturday 4th October.

There are many hospitality options from the Dine & View package in the Crow’s Nest Restaurant, to racegoers’ packages including admission, a racecard, food and drink.

Parties of 10 of more can also save over 20% when they book their Grandstand or Course Enclosure admission tickets in advance.
