Council officers are working closely with key partners across the region to prepare for – and help slow down - the predicted spread of the coronavirus.

The preparation work is being intensified following the latest Government advice that the virus is very likely to spread.

People are being advised to wash their hands regularly to help reduce the risk of transmission and also reduce the number of patients in hospitals.

Special guidance is also being issued to schools on improving hygiene.

Two men have been arrested in connection with an attempted burglary in Redcar during the early hours of yesterday morning.

Police were called to reports of an attempted break in at H. Samuel jewellers on High Street.

Officers attended the scene and two men reportedly made off from the store.

After a short chase involving a police dog, both men were detained by officers and then arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary, with intent to steal.

A cyclist has sustained a head injury in a crash involving a car.

A male, believed to be a cyclist or a biker, was injured following the collision on Longlands Road in North Ormesby yesterday.

The crash happened at the junction of Kings Road, near The Buccaneer pub.

Emergency services including Cleveland Police and the North East Ambulance Service were called to the scene at around 1pm.

One person sustained injuries and was transported to James Cook University Hospital by ambulance.
