Road policing officers have said it is a miracle that no-one was killed after a driver left the road near Dunsdale yesterday morning.
The black Jaguar vehicle ended up in a field after leaving the road close to the top of Yearby Bank.
The male driver was breathilised at the scene and further blood tests were also taken in hospital.
It is understood that analysis will tell officers if the driver was over the drink-drive limit within a week.
Police say that if the driver was under the influence, then this is wholly unacceptable and every effort will be made to present the court with evidence to result in the strongest possible sentence.

A Ford Fusion that had made-off from response officers on Saturday was located in Lackenby yesterday.
The driver tested positive for cannabis and cocaine.
He was arrested for a drug-driving offence.
Neighbourhood police officers in Redcar have arrested two people who had stolen items from a shop on the High Street.
Police community support officers were patrolling Redcar High Street on Saturday afternoon and successfully detained a male and female who had made off from from one of the major retailers with a large quantity of cosmetics.
Both were arrested on suspicion of theft and the items were returned to the store.
