A man who robbed a shop in Redcar armed with a claw hammer and a knife has been jailed.

Teesside Crown Court heard how 26-year-old Samuel Drury walked behind the counter of the Bargain Booze store on Redcar High Street with the two weapons in his hand, before threatening the female shop assistant and taking £725 from the till.

The shop assistant was extremely distressed by her ordeal and was left in a state of shock.

In court on Monday Drury, of Station Road, Redcar, admitted robbery and five counts of theft.

He had 74 offences on his record including burglary, carrying a knife and assault.

He was jailed for four years.

Labour MP for Redcar, Anna Turley, has called on the government to give the Teesport area ‘free port’ status to boost Teesside’s economy and create more jobs.

A free port is legally outside of UK customs territory, providing exemptions from taxes and duties. Goods can be imported, manufactured and then re-exported from within the freeport zone without incurring UK customs duties.

Anna made the call in the House of Commons on Monday.

A local foodbank has launched an appeal for more items for people in need.

Coatham House in Redcar, is urgently seeking non-perishable food items, such as pasta, tins, and items such as pasta and sauces or noodles.

If you would like to make a food donation, please contact Coatham House, or drop it in at the main office on Redcar High Street.
